This story is about one of those games that hasn’t entered our orbit until very recently primarily because it started life as a single-player experience. So was the case for No Rest for the Wicked, an ARPG in early access from Ori series creator Moon Studio that bills itself as “a visceral, precision action RPG set to reinvent the genre.” But now it’s entering our coverage because it’s gotten co-op play this very week.
The update that brings co-op was unveiled in a recent trailer and then formally launched yesterday; the studio calls co-op more than just a feature but something that redefines the entire title. And, mercifully, this is a free update instead of something that’s paywalled, though the ARPG itself is going to set players back $40.
That price hasn’t dissuaded gamers, nor has its early access release, as Moon Studio also announced that one million copies of the game have been sold so far. “You believed in No Rest for the Wicked during early access and helped us build it into what it is today. That’s not something we take lightly,” the studio writes. “With No Rest for the Wicked Together launching next week, this community grows bigger and more shared than ever.”
As for the game itself, it draws players into a grim world as they take up the role of a Cerim, a holy order of warriors who wield impressive powers to beat back against the threat of the Pestilence. Combat appears to be slower paced than other ARPGs, with an emphasis on precise movement and positioning in what appears to be a very Soulslike style. Soon, up to four friends can tumble around in online play together.
