Developer PlaySide has announced that its upcoming strategy game adaptation of Game of Thrones – dubbed Game of Thrones: War for Westeros – has been delayed to early 2027. Originally set for release this year, the studio explained through a blog post that the title is getting pushed back because it needs more time to reach “the high level of quality we are aiming for.”

“War for Westeros will now launch in early 2027,” said PlaySide. “We remain unwavering in our mission to deliver a real-time strategy game set in the world of Westeros that meets the expectations of both RTS players and Game of Thrones fans. This decision gives us the time needed to continue building towards that goal and ensure that the game reaches the high level of quality we are aiming for.”

Game of Thrones: War for Westeros was first announced in June 2025 with a trailer. While we didn’t really get to see any gameplay at the time, the announcement instead focused on the fact that players will get to take an active part in the overarching narrative of the Game of Thrones universe. One example shown was the Night King winning his one-on-one battle against Jon Snow, turning the latter into a White Walker.

Alongside announcing the delay, PlaySide has also revealed a few more details about Game of Thrones: War for Westeros. The strategy game will feature House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen, and the Night King’s Army of the Dead as playable factions, with each one vying to conquer the continent and lay claim to the Iron Throne. Faction choices will affect gameplay to quite an extent thanks to the presence of iconic heroes.

Jon Snow, for example, can buff his allies during a battle as he leads the charge. On the other hand, Tywin Lannister allows his forces to take more strategic approaches to battles, with an emphasis on “deliberate precision”. To make sure that all of these factions feel strong, PlaySide has noted that it has done quite a bit of work on things like responsiveness, pathfinding, and the general behaviour of the various in-game units.

“We are placing a massive emphasis on responsiveness, unit behavior, and physical impact in War for Westeros. Ensuring that unit pathing and engagement feels exactly right requires extensive, iterative work, but it is important to ensure that players immediately feel the weight of their actions on the battlefield. Instead of just managing individual soldiers, you will command full squads that react dynamically to your orders.”

PlaySide has confirmed that players will have plenty of options when it comes to the locations of the in-game battles, noting that iconic locations from the HBO series will be represented. This includes King’s Landing, The Wall, and even locations from pivotal battles in the show. Each map will have a distinct visual design, terrain layout, and strategic challenges, with an emphasis on large-scale army movement and territory control.

The studio provided a quick look at an in-development 1v1 map, dubbed Ashemark, which is located in the Westerlands and is noted as being one of the locations that got caught up in Robb Stark’s campaign during the War of the Five Kings.

Game of Thrones: War for Westeros is being developed for PC.
