Fable is Coming to PC, Xbox Series X/S and PS5 This Fall, Gameplay Details Revealed in Deep Dive

Playground Games has finally revealed more details about its first-ever open-world action RPG—the long-in-development Fable. Taking the spotlight during the recent Xbox Developer_Direct 2026 showcase, the studio offered a deep dive into the game, giving us a look at some gameplay, and how it will stick to series tradition by starting the protagonist off as a child in a small village that is pushed to a life of adventure due to a sudden event.

Among the locations players will get to visit is the iconic capital city of Albion—Bowerstone. The city will be a large one, with a number of districts housing both the richest and poorest of its citizens. The northern parts of Albion will be home to the city of Bloodstone, where two rival gangs are vying for power. Along with this, the Cult of Shadows also has some shady business going on.

Combat in Fable seems to make use of a posture system where players will be rewarded for knocking enemies off-balance with continuous flurries of attacks. Players will also be able to mix-and-match between melee combat, spellcasting, and ranged attacks using bows. Fan-favourite foes like hobbes will also be making a return, alongside new enemies like the fire-breathing Cockatrice.

Customisation is also a major factor here, and for the first time, players will be able to create their protagonist of choice from scratch. While previous games have offered very limited options, like Fable 2 allowing the choice between two genders, in Playground Games’ title, players will be able to pick from a host of options, including various head and hair styles.

The reboot will also follow the series’ tradition of giving players plenty of freedom in gameplay, allowing them to take a break from questing to even go as far as to foster relationships and potentially get married. The developers have described the gameplay as being deeply systemic, with various gameplay systems working in tandem to give players more reactivity from the world. Each Albion citizen will also be able to form their own opinions about the protagonist depending on your actions. Evict someone from their home, for example, and they will think you are heartless.

Various actions that players can take throughout the game will also contribute to their reputation. Buying up properties, for instance, will give you a reputation of being a “rich tycoon”. While this could give you access to spaces generally reserved for the upper echelons of society, commoners will start feeling indifferent towards you, assuming they don’t outright hate you.

Fable is coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in Autumn 2026.
