Rockstar Games will begin digital preloading for Grand Theft Auto VI on Tuesday, Nov. 10, nine days before the game launches on Nov. 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The download may require up to 212 GB of available storage, depending on the console.

On PlayStation 5, preloading will open at midnight local time. Xbox Series X|S owners will be able to start at 12 a.m. GMT on the same day. The advance download is available to players who preordered the digital edition, allowing the game to be installed before launch.

Preload schedule and storage requirement

  • PlayStation 5: 12 a.m. local time on Nov. 10.
  • Xbox Series X|S: 12 a.m. GMT on Nov. 10.
  • Storage: Up to 212 GB, depending on the console.
  • Code-in-box editions: Expected at retailers beginning Nov. 12.

Rockstar also said code-in-box editions for both consoles should begin appearing at retailers on Thursday, Nov. 12. Those editions include a code rather than a game disc, according to the announcement.

The company has published a Grand Theft Auto VI Pre-Load FAQ through its support website. The FAQ includes instructions for preparing a console, enabling automatic downloads and addressing installation problems. Players will need to account for the game’s storage requirement before beginning the download.

Return to Vice City

Grand Theft Auto VI is set in Vice City and the surrounding fictional state of Leonida. The story follows Jason and Lucia as they become involved in a criminal conspiracy spanning the region. Rockstar has described the game through its official materials as an open-world action and exploration game featuring criminal enterprises, characters and satire.

Rockstar’s official Grand Theft Auto VI website includes trailers, screenshots and additional game information. It also features Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, a longer presentation showing the new setting through gameplay footage captured on PlayStation 5.

The game is scheduled to launch on Nov. 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The preload dates give digital buyers an opportunity to complete the large installation before the release date, while code-in-box editions are scheduled to reach retailers one week before launch.
