Standing out on a platform that sees dozens of new releases a day is tough, yet one humble game made by a solo dev is breaking through the noise with a clever concept. Jono might be the world’s first “massively single-player” game — and people on Steam are waiting over an hour in a queue just to experience it.

Jono is a free-to-play platformer released in early October 2026, and the conceit is simple. One person plays, everyone else watches live. Each player can only take control for a single minute, and if they die, the next person in line takes over exactly where the previous player left off. There are one million randomly generated levels in total. Viewers aren’t just silent spectators, though. The game has a chat overlay where observers can say exactly what’s on their mind while they await their turn.

Progress in Jono is permanent: once a level is cleared, it never appears again. Better yet, players in the queue can participate by making their own levels to inflict on other participants. Though the game hasn’t been out long, folks are definitely getting invested in it. Earlier this month, a single player spent over five hours trying to beat one fan-created level. According to the developer, Part-Time Monkey, over 100 players have had the game open for 10 hours or more.

What’s on the other end of the one millionth level? The developer isn’t saying — that would be spoiling the surprise. Fans are expecting something big, like perhaps a level that combines all previous courses into one intimidating challenge. Whatever it ends up being, it’ll be a while before players see it: even at a rate of about 5,000 levels cleared a day, the developer estimates that fans won’t get to the end until midway through 2027. That is, if the end is ever reached at all.

Fans aren’t sweating the prize at the end, however. So far, Jono has a “Very Positive” rating on Steam.

“This game is such a social experiment it’s crazy,” one review reads. Another reviewer wrote, “I waited 1 hour for my turn and let everyone down within 60 seconds.”

A third player compared the experience to “being a kid, going over to a friend and taking turns playing something random.”

Despite Jono’s popularity, the developer has no plans to capitalize on the attention. The creator is actively working on the game and trying to improve it based on player feedback, but Jono won’t be updated with any type of monetization. Instead, the developer is encouraging fans to check out their other games if they truly want to give some monetary support.

“This game will remain free,” the dev wrote on Reddit.
