I still remember it, and so does developer Tiny Monks Tales judging by Woodo, its gentle and nostalgic puzzle game.

Woodo is a mix between a virtual coloring book and a jigsaw puzzle. In each level, you’re presented with colorless diorama scenes dotted with objects. A cozy den, a busy farm, a little island paradise surrounded by fish. Your job is to fill in the image by pulling full-colored objects from a sidebar and placing them in the right spot. It’s not particularly challenging, but it’s not meant to be. (There’s also a generous hint system to ensure that you never get stuck.) You’re just meant to enjoy the pleasure of building with little toys.

It’s a simple idea, but one that’s easy to get lost in. That’s largely thanks to Woodo’s standout feature: its woodcraft-inspired art style. Everything looks like a hand-carved toy pulled straight out of a kid’s toybox. The pieces are delicately textured to the point where you can feel their smooth finish in your hands. Some great sound design helps sell the effect, as wooden pieces rattle and clink with a pleasant heft when you click them.

Those touches turn Woodo into a tactile delight built for all ages. Sure, it’s not more complex than a shape-matching game, but it’s undeniably satisfying to click pieces into the right spot and watch a white diorama burst to life with color over time. Different levels toy around with the mechanic a bit, bouncing you between long builds in 360-degree environments, while others are more narrative-driven interludes that have you piecing together a story a few pieces at a time. It’s breezy, well-paced, and has enough ideas to keep you interested over a tight five hours.

The puzzles aren’t just there for the sake of play. There’s a story that weaves the levels together, as a narrator retells the tale Foxy, a little city fox who gets sent to the countryside for the summer against her will. She’s resistant to the idea at first, but soon comes to appreciate the joy of nature after befriending a froggy local. It’s all told through gentle-voiced narration that makes it feel like you’re being read a bedtime story as you solve levels.

That narrative layer is, admittedly, corny. Not to dive into a “yet you participate in society” rant, but it’s a bit eye-rolling to walk players through a story about the importance of putting down your phone and embracing nature and physical play, all through a video game that you experience on a screen. That flavor of preachy art that romanticizes a lost era always tends to come off as flat, and it can be especially grating in a game that inherently can’t square its medium with its message.
