Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Might be Followed Up With More Spin-Offs

Square Enix might be getting ready to wrap up the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy with the April 8th, 2027, release of Revelation, but that might not be the end of the series. In an interview with GamerBraves, company director Yoshinori Kitase said that, while the story is definitely wrapping up with the third part, Square Enix isn’t ruling out potential spin-offs.

“In terms of the Remake series with this title, we really wanted to feel like, and we really have put so much work into this to feel like we’ve done everything we possibly can to make this title have the best quality it possibly can have.”

Reminiscing about the original 1997 release of Final Fantasy 7, Kitase said the team was ready to move on to new projects. However, as history has shown, the game and its characters proved to be too popular to leave behind.

“When we created the original Final Fantasy 7, we really thought, ‘Okay, we’re done now. We can move on.’ The characters were so popular and so lasting, it really… The fan reaction to these characters really is what brought on the spinoff games as well, like Advent Children and Crisis Core.”

While he hasn’t guaranteed that history will repeat itself following the release of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, he has noted that there are some similarities between the 1997 release and sentiments amongst the development team and fans of the Remake trilogy.

“While we’re putting our all into Revelation and making sure it’s the best quality and we can confidently say it’s the end of the series, who knows what’s going to happen with fan reaction and how people come to enjoy this series and this finale.”

However, players won’t have to worry about cliffhangers when they finish Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. “For the Remake series specifically, this is being designed as the finale of this trilogy. So, we really aren’t thinking in terms of what’s the true ending; we don’t have any plans like that.”

As Square Enix has confirmed, the team is working on post-launch DLCs that expand the stories of some of the trilogy’s characters. These include one focusing on Sephiroth while the other goes deeper into the story of Vincent and the Turks. Kitase even mentioned that more DLC is being considered, and that fans of the games will be quite happy with the characters chosen for emphasis.

“We are seriously considering a DLC for Revelation though, in the sense that the way the Yuffie DLC focuses on one specific character, we are considering that for future titles. So, we won’t be spilling any beans here today, but the characters that we are considering, I think a lot of people will be very happy about.”

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is coming to PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. For more details, check out what director Naoki Hamaguchi has said about its open world.
