Saber Interactive is Not Using Generative AI for Licensed Games, Says CCO

While Saber Interactive has found itself in the midst of quite a bit of controversy regarding the use of generative AI for its upcoming title – Rideshare “Stimulator” – the company’s chief creative officer, Tim Willits, has said that generative AI is not being used for any of its licensed games. This includes titles like Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3, Turok: Origins and Jurassic Park Survival.

“There is absolutely no generative AI in Space Marine 3 or Stuntman or Turok or Jurassic Park, or Wick,” said Willits in an interview with IGN. “But like we said, we’re going to experiment with it. Try it out in Rideshare, see if it works. See if people like it. If they don’t like it, we’re like, ‘All right.’”

On the subject of its use in Rideshare “Stimulator”, he said, “It’s a rideshare simulator. If you’re going to experiment, it’s a good one to experiment on. You know what I’m saying?”

Speaking further about the potential of generative AI, Willits expressed his belief that no one has really figured out how it can be used in game development yet. “If anyone tells you that they have it figured out, they don’t. It’ll take a couple years, and things will settle out, and we’ll figure it out.”

“We’ve always been using AI in some stretch of the imagination, but we, as in developers, we don’t really know what to do with it. Honestly, we don’t,” he continued. “If anyone tells you they do, they don’t. And then players, they don’t really know what to do with it. So, I do believe this is going to happen. Somebody — I don’t know who — somebody will come up with a game that is so freaking cool that it will change everyone’s opinion and it’ll be like, ‘Oh, that’s it.’ And then things will settle.

“And we’re still trying to figure it out. We don’t have any answers. We’re guessing, to be honest. But we’re doing some experimentation. We’ll see if it works out, doesn’t work out.”

Saber’s use of generative AI for Rideshare “Stimulator” came to the spotlight when a former writer on the game spoke out against it, claiming to have been replaced by the tool for work on the title. The controversy got more heated when the studio’s CEO, Matt Karch, publicly insulted the writer.

In the meantime, Saber Interactive announced that it was working on Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3 all the way back in February 2025. While few details about it have been revealed so far, the company has confirmed that it is going through a similar kind of development cycle as Space Marine 2. Saber also hasn’t yet committed to a release window for the game, noting that it isn’t yet confirmed for 2028.

As its name implies, Space Marine 3 will be a follow-up to the story of Space Marine 2, and will likely bring with it more co-op content as well. Space Marine 2 was released on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2024. For more details, check out our review.
