Grand Theft Auto 6 Leaks Investigation is “Rapidly Evolving”, Says Take-Two

Following the Grand Theft Auto 6 Extended Look from last week, leaks of the game have slowed down quite a bit. In the meantime, however, Rockstar Games parent company Take-Two Interactive has said that its investigation into the leaker is “rapidly evolving”. According to TorrentFreak, the company has posted a new court filing with a second subpoena to Discord.

While it had previously issued a DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) subpoena against YouTube to take down videos of the leaks, its new subpoena has also asked the court to keep the results sealed in order to make sure that those responsible don’t discover that details about them had been revealed.

DMCA subpoenas essentially allow rightsholders to get information from third parties about related cases without having to file a complete lawsuit. In this instance, Take-Two Interactive has been using it to look for the leaker through Discord’s records. The previous DMCA subpoena filed by the company was public, which even led news outlets to discover three Discord servers that might be related to the leaks.

“Take-Two has identified one additional Discord user and obtained additional identifying information for a previously identified Discord user, as well as additional information concerning the community servers identified in its prior subpoena for which it now seeks more targeted information,” wrote the company in its filing.

The request to seal the results of the subpoena comes due to it revealing “highly sensitive, confidential information about an ongoing investigation into copyright infringement and the misappropriation of Take-Two’s confidential information.”

“Public disclosure of this information could compromise Take-Two’s ongoing investigation and even tip off the alleged infringers as to the nature and progress of Take-Two’s investigation and information Take-Two has gathered about the infringement.”

In the meantime, the company has also dropped its subpoenas against Google to identify three YouTube users – CyberLeeks, Surfer24k, and CyberLeek_ar_io – all of whom were allegedly connected to the leak. Judge John P. Cronan, however, also hadn’t signed off on the subpoena, and instead asked Take-Two for more details about how the three were connected to the case.

“Take-Two has determined it no longer needs the particular information requested. Thus, Take-Two respectfully withdraws its subpoena request,” said the company.

Interestingly, leaked gameplay footage of Grand Theft Auto 6 had sparked quite a bit of conversation throughout the industry and among fans of the franchise. The leaks, along with the Grand Theft Auto 6 Extended Look, had even prompted some to claim that the upcoming title looked a lot like GTA 5. However, voice actor Ned Luke, who played Michael De Santa in the 2013 title, said that people who claim this are “out of their minds”.

“[Grand Theft Auto 6] looks nothing like Grand Theft Auto 5. I think they’re out of their minds. I’ll tell you one thing, I never looked that good,” said Luke in a recent interview.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is being developed for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, and is slated for release on November 19th. In the meantime, check out some of the details hidden in the showcase.
