After secretive development, delays, and even a studio buyout by Daybreak along the way, Cold Iron Studios’ follow-up to Aliens Fireteam Elite is finally here today. Aliens Fireteam Elite 2 debuts today on Steam, Xbox, PS5, and the EGS for a base price of 50 buckaroos.

“Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 drops up to four players into the boots of Colonial Marines deployed to the most hostile corners of the Alien universe. This is not a rescue mission – it’s a fight for survival. Xenomorphs stalk the corridors, ambush from the shadows, and swarm in overwhelming numbers. Every room could be your last. With deeper squad mechanics, smarter enemies, and a fully customizable Specialist class, AFE2 delivers the definitive co-op Aliens experience.”

Readers will recall that Daybreak and Cold Iron created a bit of a kerfuffle earlier this month when they sunsetted the only playable Switch version of the OG Aliens Fireteam Elite. The studios surely hoped to alleviate backlash by announcing a program to provide the sequel to Switch players at a discounted rate and promising that the sequel wouldn’t be subject to a future cloud sunset on the platform.

Did that work? It’s hard to say, but at least on Steam, a small number of players have piled into the reviews to blast the game within minutes of its launch, driving the average reviews into “mostly negative” (we assume that will even out over time, though). At the moment, gamers are complaining about the price, rough gameplay, floaty animations, and even character models without heads (heh). Reading through the reviews, however, we’re also noticing a lot of repeated phrases that seem a bit sketchy as well as complaints about the existence of female characters, so fair warning there. But we also see some positive reviews that still suggest waiting for a sale. Either way, it’s worth pointing out the unrest.
