We do like to see the little guys make good here in our genre, and that appears to be just what’s happening for the pixel art 2-D MMORPG Soul’s Remnant, which made it to its projected Steam early access release, and while it’s not necessarily setting the genre alight, it does seem to be doing pretty well for itself.
As of this writing, the game’s user review score on Steam is at mostly positive, with the majority of those reviews comparing it to MapleStory while lauding its non-predatory monetization, fun retro vibes, and solid combat. Meanwhile its debut has garnered a respectable player concurrency on the platform, drawing in 2,814 players at its peak so far.
The MMO’s developer Chaomoon took an understandable victory lap for getting the game to this point after 10 years of effort, which even garnered some happy responses from the MMORPG subreddit of all places. “I grew up playing classic MMORPGs in the 2000s […] and it was an experience that never really left me,” they write. “I felt there was something magical about those MMOs from back then, and so I wanted to make a game that could bring back some of that magic.”
