Injustice 2 Has Sold More Than 9 Million Copies

While there have been plenty of rumors going around of NetherRealm potentially working on a new Injustice game, series co-creator and the studio’s chief creative officer, Ed Boon, has offered an update on how many copies Injustice 2 sold following its 2017 release on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. In a social media post, Boon confirmed that more than 9 million copies of the game have been sold worldwide.

His comment came after a social media user asked for some clarification about the fighting game’s sales figures. Using a screenshot of sales figures for superhero games up to May 2019, the social media user was asking for confirmation on whether Injustice 2 had managed to sell more than 2 million copies.

It is worth noting that Injustice 2 also got free-to-play mobile games on Android and iOS. Whether Boon’s 9 million sales figure takes these versions into account or if he is only talking about the PC and console versions is currently unknown.

Reports from earlier this year have indicated that NetherRealm Studios is working on a superhero fighting game. However, there is uncertainty about whether it will be a third entry in the Injustice franchise, or if the company will decide to go with another title altogether. According to known leaker MultiverSusie, the company has seemingly been trying to move away from the Injustice branding.

When it first came out in 2013, Injustice: Gods Among Us was an alternate take on many of DC’s line-up of superheroes. The central plot revolved around the idea of Superman finally snapping after being manipulated by the Joker, and deciding that humanity needs him to become a tyrannical ruler. Batman, fearing the fate of his universe, decides to call in reinforcements from alternate universes to fight off Superman and the other heroes that have decided to side with him.

Its sequel – Injustice 2 – would further continue the story. While Batman has been trying to rebuild society while also fighting off the evil Superman’s allies, a new threat emerges, turning what was originally a conflict between two opposing sides into a free-for-all between three distinct factions.

While the stories of both Injustice games are fairly self-contained thanks to being set in their own distinct universes, there is plenty of room for a sequel if NetherRealm Studios wants to make one. On the other hand, the company’s rumored decision to move away from the branding might indicate that it wants to tap into some of the newer concepts that have been introduced by DC in its comics.

One of the most popular lines of comics from DC has been its Absolute line, which features reimagined DC superheroes taking on threats far greater than they would have due to the universe being designed to be against them from the ground up. NetherRealm Studios could have a lot to tap into with the Absolute setting, since its reimaginings of characters like Wonder Woman, Batman, and Martian Manhunter have gone on to become critically-acclaimed fan-favorites.

In the meantime, NetherRealm Studios hasn’t confirmed whether it is currently working on a new Mortal Kombat game or something else altogether.

Since we released Injustice 2, it has sold over 9 million copies worldwide.
