With its nail-biting moral choices, gritty combat, and rich lore, you’d think an acclaimed fantasy series like Game of Thrones would have plenty of fantastic video game adaptations by now. There have been attempts, some of which have been solid. Game of Thrones: War for Westeros might still be the first video game title that truly captures the grand scale the series is known for.
So far, aside from an initial reveal and news of a delay, we haven’t seen much of the game. The news drought will officially end on August 25, with Gamescom Opening Night Live. Developers PlaySide Games teases that the upcoming real-time strategy game for PC will debut its first gameplay footage at the European video game exhibition. The short clip marking the occasion showcases a Lannister army charging toward a Stark host. A dragon on the enemy side prevents the wealthy Lannisters from repeating the events of the series’ iconic song, ‘The Rains of Castamere.’
The game will also include House Targaryen and the Night King army. Each faction has its own set of tactics, abilities, and heroes. The game promises to let players form alliances with different groups in a bid for the Iron Throne. Jon Snow leads the Northern army, Tywin commands the Lannister army, and Daenerys leads the Targaryens. War for Westeros also offers multiplayer.
Though the game focuses on large-scale battles where players command entire armies, PlaySide Games intends to create a “visceral” experience. Beyond standard unit types, War for Westeros includes magical elements, like giants and the undead. Diplomacy is a big aspect of the game as well, and it can lead to some unexpected moments. During an early development diary, for example, footage showed Jon Snow teaming up with the Night King to take on King’s Landing.
“It’s cunning that decides who sits on the Iron Throne,” says the trailer.
Gamescom Opening Night Live airs on Tuesday, Aug. 25. The show, which is hosted by Geoff Keighley, promises to reveal new games and make a variety of exclusive announcements.
