On Monday, we covered the news that original-flavor Aliens Fireteam Elite players – specifically, folks who played the cloud version on the Switch – had effectively lost access to the game. Daybreak-owned Cold Iron Studios had apparently delisted the game and then sunsetted it there, essentially meaning that cloud players on that platform could no longer play the game they bought even offline since the host servers were gone.
Naturally, players raised hell over that, especially since the studios are now in full hype mode for the sequel Aliens Fireteam Elite 2, which is due out in under two weeks. Now, the companies are actually addressing it… by making the sequel cheaper for affected gamers.
“We want to make this right,” Daybreak/Cold Iron says.
“We wanted to address Nintendo Switch players’ concerns following the closure of the Aliens: Fireteam Elite cloud service. We understand the frustration from players who purchased the game and can no longer access it. While we previously communicated that the cloud service would end on August 5, we recognize that simply providing advance notice doesn’t change the fact that players paid for a game they can no longer play. We deeply appreciate everyone who supported Aliens: Fireteam Elite on Nintendo Switch, and we want to make this right. We are working on a program for players who purchased Aliens: Fireteam Elite on Nintendo Switch that will provide an option to receive a discounted voucher or credit on Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2[.]”
Notably, the companies stress that AFE2 itself will run locally on the Switch 2, not in the cloud, so this won’t happen again. But that hasn’t stopped players from pointing out that they want the original content and campaigns ported to the new game – and that they still want physical disks to safeguard their play in the future.
In the meantime, the teams have dropped a new video showcasing the Medic.
