As we get closer to the upcoming theatrical release of the newest movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – Spider-Man: Brand New Day – actor Tom Holland has revealed that he was inspired by Insomniac Games’ work on the Marvel’s Spider-Man series. In an interview with IGN, he spoke about recently playing them again, as well as how he based some of his own moves in the film on the finishing moves from the Insomniac games.

“A lot of the finishing moves. I was actually playing the game last night. I couldn’t sleep last night; I was so excited about today. I was trying to figure out what I was gonna do, and I was like, ‘I’ll just throw the game on and have some fun.’ For me, a lot of those finishing moves, a lot of our stuff was influenced by that stuff.”

Director Destin Daniel Cretton also revealed that plenty of people among the design and stunt crew were also fans of Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man series. Some even went as far as to bring in screenshots from the games to the writers’ room.

“A lot of the action designers and stunt people we had were huge gamers,” he said. “They were able to experience things in those games that made them excited, and they would just screengrab the moves they really liked and bring them into the writers’ room and show it to me. And then we’d be like, ‘Yeah, that’s sick. Let’s try to figure out how to do that for real.’”

Holland has played the role of Spider-Man in the MCU since he first made his debut as the character in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. The character would go on to get his own standalone movies beginning with 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. The character has also shown up in other MCU movies, including crossovers like Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is going to be the fourth mainline MCU Spider-Man film, with its story taking place around four years after the events of 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. The core narrative will revolve around Peter Parker uncovering a mystery that hints at larger threats than he has faced in the past, as well as his body undergoing strange new mutations, giving him abilities that he may not yet be able to control.

Along with Holland, the film will see many actors reprising their roles, including Zendaya as Michelle Jones-Watson, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, and Michael Mando as Mac Gargan and The Scorpion. Newer cast members will include Mark Ruffalo reprising his role as Bruce Banner and The Hulk and Jon Bernthal returning as Frank Castle and The Punisher.

Celebrating the release of the movie, as well as the upcoming launch of fighting game Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, Insomniac Games recently released a free update for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, introducing a pair of new suits to the game. The PS5 version of the game got more things in the update, like support for Enhanced PSSR and Power Saver Mode.
