Hot Dogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades (H3VR) entered Steam Early Access in April 2016. It was part of the initial slew of virtual reality games that garnered attention and became popular, alongside games such as Superhot VR and Job Simulator. On Steam, the FPS sandbox has almost 20,000 reviews, with an overwhelmingly positive consensus.

Over 10 years later, on July 4, 2026, H3VR finally left early access. In a Steam blog post, developer Anton Hand described it as “a moment he wondered if [it] would ever come,” adding that his friends would “lovingly poke” him every six months or so to ask when it would finally release.

This update, the 120th in that 10-year period, has given Take & Hold, the flagship game mode, a “huge facelift.” A new character known as the Lucky Looter and a “BBQ Range” scene have both been added. Not to mention the gameplanner system, which Hand explains will let players wire objects together to “make devices, scenario moments, gadgets, and whatever your imagination might come up with.”

In May 2026, Hand also announced a sequel: Hot Dogs, Horseshoes, & Hand Grenades 2. Rather than strictly being a sandbox, H3VR2 builds upon the foundation from the first game to provide a slightly more linear experience where you must “fight your way through an endless proc-gen megastructure,” according to the Steam description. It’s also being billed as both an immersive sim and an extraction shooter.

Hand, the CTO of four-person studio Rust Limited, is collaborating with Zulubo Productions to develop the sequel, which means there’s a team of almost 20 developers working on it. It’s also geared towards the Meta Quest 3, whereas Hand had previously stated the first two versions of the headset weren’t powerful enough to support it and therefore required connecting to a PC via SteamVR.

On Reddit, user YossarianTheAssyrian described the original H3VR as “the best-feeling gunplay” they’ve experienced in VR, adding that it’s “immensely satisfying to interact with the firearms and other toys.” Meanwhile, user THEBAESGOD explains that H3VR is the only game that makes them miss their VR headset.

Hot Dogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades is available now on Steam for $19.99, while the release date for the sequel is yet to be announced.
