Most of the folks here at MOP know Airship Syndicate as the studio behind the fun but ultimately bellyflopped multiplayer RPG Wayfinder. You’ll recall that the title was originally built as an online experience, but was dropped by its publisher Digital Extremes shortly after its stumble into early access. The game never quite recovered as the studio suffered multiple layoff rounds, feature delays, and ultimately ended up transforming into a single-player RPG with optional online gameplay, though it did make it to a 1.0 release by 2024.
Now, it looks as if the remaining devs at the studio are ready to put forth another new game in the form of DUST: Origins, an upcoming isometric “dark sci-fi shooter” that’s planning to launch a Kickstarter campaign soon. And by all accounts, this one reads like it’s single-player only. It even goes out of its way to avoid mentioning Wayfinder in its blurb. Oof.
“Imagined by the artists and developers behind Darksiders, Battle Chasers, and Ruined King comes DUST: Origins, a handcrafted sci-fi action game set aboard an orbital prison station in total collapse. Abruptly freed from cryo-prison, you fight to escape a murderer’s row of violent criminals and horrifying monsters before the station tears itself apart.”
More information is being promised to those who follow the Kickstarter ahead of its undated opening, but until then we’ve got a teaser trailer that basically sets the grim and gruesome setting of the game that can be watched below.
