Infinity Ward is Developing “The Definitive Modern Warfare” that Starts “a New Chapter”

Infinity Ward has confirmed that it is working on a new Call of Duty game in the Modern Warfare series, and in a video, has said that it will be “the definitive Modern Warfare“. The title is also slated to kick off a “new chapter” for the Modern Warfare series. Whether this means we will get yet another reboot like the one we saw in 2019 or if it takes place in the same continuity remains to be seen.

The video statement, which you can check out below, was followed up with a social media post where the studio reiterated its intentions to develop the game, as well as how it marks a new chapter for Infinity Ward as a whole.

“We build visceral, immersive combat experiences that hit different,” wrote the Infinity Ward studio heads. “As a new chapter begins for this studio, we’re focused on what defines us: passion, precision, obsession, and an unrelenting drive to make the best entertainment in the industry. Our next game is the result of that mindset.”

“Determined. Bold. Relentless. Built by a team pushing every detail, every system, every moment to its limit. On behalf of everyone at [Infinity Ward], we’re proud of what we’ve been building and excited to finally start sharing it with you.”

The statement indicates that the studio is getting closer to a full reveal of the next Call of Duty game.

The only announcement that has been made about Call of Duty prior to Infinity Ward’s latest statement was the confirmation that this year’s entry will not be coming to PS4. Curiously enough, there was no mention of an Xbox One version being skipped as well, which raises questions about whether this was a decision made by Microsoft to make its older console seem more appealing. The lack of a PS4 release will also mark 2026 as the first year that a Call of Duty game hasn’t come to Sony’s eighth-generation console since the release of 2013’s Call of Duty: Ghosts.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has been rumored to be the next entry in the Call of Duty franchise for quite some time now. A report from last month has indicated that Activision is looking forward to releasing the title in October. Interestingly, the same report also alleges that it will be a reboot of Modern Warfare.

Infinity Ward wanting to work with a clean slate for a new Modern Warfare shouldn’t come as any surprise, considering how poorly-received 2023’s Modern Warfare 3 was. In our own review, we gave it a score of 5 out of 10, and noted that, despite its core gameplay feeling good, its campaign was a complete mess and its concept of Open Combat missions led to unimaginative and dreary experiences.

Last year’s Call of Duty, Black Ops 7, had also been quite negatively reviewed since launch, with analysts believing that it was lacking in player numbers due to bad decisions layered on top of difficult market conditions. Check out our review for more details.
