Atomic Heart 2, The Cube Developer Isn’t Integrating Generative AI in its Tools

Nvidia’s DLSS 5 presentation from a couple of months ago certainly raised a few eyebrows, and many developers have been asked questions about the technology. One of these has been Mundfish, the studio behind Atomic Heart, and upcoming games like Atomic Heart 2 and The Cube. In an interview with WCCFTech, the studio spoke about the technology, calling it “highly promising”. As for using it, however, the company has noted that it will “carefully evaluate” it.

“DLSS 5 is a very new and highly promising technology. As a studio that has always loved pushing graphical boundaries, we are currently closely monitoring its development,” said Atomic Heart director and Mundfish CEO Robert Bagratuni. “We will continue to carefully evaluate this and other major breakthroughs to see how such advancements could potentially benefit our players in the future.”

Bagratuni was also asked about the use of generative AI in game development. He acknowledged that the subject has been quite controversial, especially since it can “simplify” the pre-production phase of game development. However, for now, Mundfish isn’t integrating any generative AI tools in its development pipeline.

“It’s true, there are a lot of differing opinions on this topic right now,” he said. We understand that neural networks and AI can significantly simplify the pre-production phase of projects, helping to iterate ideas faster and reduce overall development time. Because of this, we conducted extensive internal research to evaluate their potential for our workflows. However, at this moment, we have decided not to integrate them into our daily production pipelines.”

“We strongly believe in maintaining a balance between technology and human creativity. And despite the obvious advantages of AI, we are confident that our team can achieve massive success without relying on it daily. That being said, we continue to closely monitor the evolution of AI tech and don’t rule out the possibility of adopting it in the future. Ultimately, we think many companies across the industry will implement it into their pipelines in one form or another. After all, AI is just a tool – it can never replace the genuine work of creative people, but should rather serve as an instrument in their hands.”

Mundfish recently wrapped up the story of Atomic Heart with the release of its Blood on Crystal DLC. In the meantime, the studio has also been working on a full-fledged sequel to Atomic Heart, as well as an MMO shooter that takes place in the same universe – The Cube.

Atomic Heart 2 was officially announced in June 2025 and has been confirmed for PC and consoles. While a release window hasn’t been revealed yet, Mundfish has confirmed that it is being developed using Unreal Engine 5, and its story will be a new one taking place on a global stage. It will also see the return of Atomic Heart protagonist Agent P-3 in some capacity.

Bagratuni had spoken about the expanded RPG mechanics that will be present in Atomic Heart 2, which will include deeper skill trees with more options. Along with this, the systems will also be “integrated into the world and the experience,” rather than simply being “layered on top just for complexity’s sake.”

As for The Cube, Mundfish hasn’t yet revealed too many details, aside from providing a few hints about its narrative in Atomic Heart: Blood on Crystal. The title will revolve around a strange floating structure, known as The Cube, showing up suddenly and becoming the center of many dangerous phenomena.
