Intel Serpent Lake could be the codename of one of the most important CPU launches in a long time. Following the announcement last year of Intel joining forces with Nvidia to produce CPUs with integrated Nvidia graphics, we’re now starting to see rumors of the first products that could be born from this coupling of tech titans. And Titan really is the word, as the new CPU is rumored to be a variant of Intel’s Titan Lake design.

What makes this so significant is that it will mean that, for the first time, Nvidia will have its GPU technology packaged alongside regular CPUs used in gaming laptops, handhelds, and compact PCs. Previously, you either needed a separate Nvidia graphics card for a PC or an extra Nvidia GPU for laptops/handhelds, if you wanted access to Nvidia graphics tech. Meanwhile, AMD has long had CPUs that integrate both its CPU and GPU tech. However, it’s no secret that AMD’s GPU tech lags behind that of Nvidia, and that, despite having the best gaming CPU options for desktop right now, AMD’s CPU tech still tends to fall behind Intel’s when it comes to power consumption for mobile devices. That makes this Intel/Nvidia combo potentially hugely disruptive to the industry.

The Serpent Lake name and its association with it being the first Intel x Nvidia CPU launch come from a regular source of tech leaks, @jaykihn0, on X. In a thread of posts on the social media platform spanning several days, various users discuss the details of upcoming Intel CPUs, including its Nova Lake, Razer Lake, and Hammer Lake designs, with one user asking whether Razer Lake will feature an “Nvidia GPU tile.” In response, another user suggests this will arrive with Hammer Lake, but then Jaykihn replies simply with “Serpent Lake,” seemingly correcting the first response.

In response to further questions, Jaykihn goes on to state that “Serpent is a Titan branch,” referring to Serpent Lake being a design based on the Titan Lake architecture, rather than Hammer Lake or other designs.

All these Lake names are codenames for the design – known as an architecture – of upcoming CPUs. These overarching designs specify a range of products that can eventually be based on the design. So, for instance, the current range of Intel Core Ultra 200 desktop CPUs – the most recent of which I tested in my Intel Core Ultra 7 270K Plus review – are based on the Intel Arrow Lake-S architecture, which is a revision of its original Arrow Lake architecture used in the Intel Core Ultra 7 265k, for instance.

AMD and Nvidia also use a similar codename system, with the latest RTX 5000 GPUs being based on Nvidia’s Blackwell architecture, AMD’s Ryzen 9000 CPUs using its Zen 5 architecture, and AMD Radeon RX 9000 GPUs using its RDNA 4 architecture.

Details of what’s inside the Intel Serpent Lake architecture are very thin on the ground at the moment. So, we don’t know what GPU architecture it will use (it could be based on a current-gen architecture like Blackwell, or a future Nvidia design) or how many CPU cores it might have. However, previous leaks relating to Titan Lake suggest it will use a unified CPU core design, instead of the split design of current chips, which have more powerful P-Cores and less powerful E-Cores.

These same leaks also suggest Titan Lake will arrive in 2028, so there’s a reasonable chance Serpent Lake will arrive around the same time.

It’s worth reiterating that these CPUs won’t be used much for typical desktop gaming PCs, as most gamers will still benefit from having a separate CPU and graphics card. However, they could find use in laptops, possibly gaming handhelds, and compact PCs, where space is so limited that a separate graphics card simply isn’t an option.
