It’s no secret that feeling like you earned something through hard work feels good, but how much should work affect your leisure time? If you’re of the mind that earning anything in an MMORPG should be through that ol’ “pull up the bootstraps” mindset, then perhaps Winds of Valen, a new free-to-play MMORPG from Fiery Dog Games, is right up your alley.
“Experience old-school progression where every level, skill, and drop is earned through effort. Train your combat, mining, and smithing skills, and hunt for rare and unique items in a seamless open world filled with danger and discovery.”
Valen hearkens back to the “golden age” old school sandboxes with an open world, with non-linear progression, combat and crafting skills, and unique drops from every monster that display openly and change dynamically to help players with a string of bad farming luck.
The MMORPG has been out since last November and has garnered itself a “mostly positive” Steam user score, while updates of note include the addition of new skill lines like archery, potion making, and fishing; a PvP zone known as the Darklands, and better combat pathing, among other things. A short-term roadmap further plots the arrival of magic, high-level content, and a rework for smithing.
