I’m gonna level with you, I’ve been playing MMORPGs since 1997 and I’ve never heard of WildGuns, and neither has Wikipedia, but there are some scattered references to the 2007 browser-based MMO across the internet, so I’m willing to take Gameforge’s word for it that people have been begging the company to bring it back. And back is indeed where the German company is bringing it.

“Today, Gameforge has announced the official return of WildGuns, its browser-based Wild West strategy MMO, revived following sustained community demand across social media and support channels,” the company says. “The relaunch will invite both veterans and newcomers alike to re-enter the frontier directly from their browser — no download required.”

Worth a note is that it’s a strategy MMO, not a traditional MMORPG, and it’s not exactly handling some of the more objectionable and stereotypical tropes of the Old West particularly carefully, so don’t be expecting the most modern or inclusive motifs here.

“In WildGuns, players choose between three rival nations — Native Americans, Cowboys, or Mexicans — each vying for dominance across the prairies. By developing their character, completing dangerous missions, earning gold and reputation, and challenging other players for land and influence, players forge their own path toward power and renown.”

Gameforge is opening all-new servers with “no legacy advantages,” so this is definitely a reboot with a do-over, and though the team calls it a “faithful revival,” it’s also clean that the devs are “introducing subtle refinements to pacing and usability, to ensure a smooth and engaging experience for modern audiences.”

Might not be for you, but it’s hard to complain about Gameforge systematically reviving and burnishing old browser MMOs. Expect this one live “soon.”
