Assassin’s Creed Invictus is “Plain Dismaying,” Alleges Developer Who Wonders “Who This Game is For”

Following its massive internal reset, Ubisoft is in a cluster these days. Between cancelled projects, rumored titles like Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced getting delayed, and Beyond Good and Evil 2 remaining in development, it’s a mess. However, even before that, the fate of Assassin’s Creed Invictus remained thoroughly up in the air.

While its current development status is unknown, leaker @xj0nathan (who revealed details of Rainbow Six Siege X before launch) reported that even a developer on the project doesn’t believe in the Fall Guys-style take on the series.

“Here are their words: ‘I don’t know a single colleague who likes Invictus. Only the managers will probably keep smiling and singing the praises of this project.

“’It’s awful: ridiculous animations, hideous and cartoonish characters (their faces are just as awful), idiotic sound and visual effects, combat arenas… the concept is just plain dismaying. I wonder who this game is even for and why it was made. Maybe it’s only meant for kids… six-year-olds? I have no idea. If that’s the case, I pity the parents of those kids who are going to be hounded for money to fuel a fresh wave of microtransactions.’”

When asked by Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson if the attached image of a Fall Guys bean dressed as Ezio from Assassin’s Creed 2 is the actual visual style, @xj0nathan responded, “Oh no, not at all, the game is more like Fortnite but a little less ‘cartoonish.’ Let’s say it’s somewhere between realistic and cel-shaded.”

Of course, as Henderson pointed out, there should be care in publishing statements from someone who is “clearly, and many would argue rightfully, disgruntled with everything going on,” especially if the rest of the team thinks differently. @xj0nathan agrees. “As I said in another reply, I had a similar statement last year, even before the current situation at Ubisoft, so I don’t think it’s related to dissatisfaction.

“But at some point, you’re right, we shouldn’t implicate all the team members. Maybe some of them love this upcoming project…lol. Don’t hesitate to ask your sources about it; you might get different feedback.”

Announced in September 2022 alongside Codename Red (which would become Assassin’s Creed Shadows) and Codename Hexe (still in development), Assassin’s Creed Invictus was noted to be a standalone multiplayer project. It involves those who worked on titles like For Honor and Rainbow Six Siege, but aside from being more approachable than previous Assassin’s Creed multiplayer efforts, actual gameplay and concrete details have not been revealed.

While Henderson reported that it should have launched last year (which clearly hasn’t happened), there have been no official updates on Invictus . Time will tell if it’s next up on the chopping block.
