CangMo Game Entertainment has released the first trailer for its upcoming title A Whisper of Fall: Jinyiwei, which was formerly known as Project: Jinyiwei. The trailer, which you can check out below, measures at over 4 minutes in length, and gives us a glimpse at the story setup, the world, and gameplay.

There’s an emphasis on a mechanic referred to as “Heavenly Deduction”, using which the protagonist can rewind time to change the outcome of his missions. Examples are showcased quite early in the trailer, with our hero – an ordinary boatman – looking for a way into a heavily-guarded castle to assassinate a target. While the direct action-oriented approach leads to the target escaping from the window, the player can then use Heavenly Deduction to rewind time and wait for nightfall.

At night, the hero is able to slip into the castle to get his hands on the Guard Commander’s Token. Using this, he can simply walk into the castle during the day and assassinate his target before any alerts are raised, eventually just walking out.

The combat showcased in the trailer reveals strong Wuxia influences, with the player capable of wielding many different weapon types that one would associate with the genre, from spears to dual blades and even a single one-handed sword. Combat is fast-paced, and makes full use of acrobatic action, with one combat encounter even taking place while all characters involved are running along a wall.

The Wuxia influences aren’t just confined to the combat systems either. The protagonist is incredibly agile and can leap across rooftops, vault over obstacles and run on walls. A meld of combat and non-combat traversal was also shown off with the protagonist seamlessly ending a fight by running across the side of a ship.

While we didn’t get to see what boss fights might look like in A Whisper of Fall: Jinyiwei, the gameplay sections of the trailer did include an enemy with a large health bar at the top of the screen, capable of using fiery attacks alongside their dual-wielding sword-based moves. Enemies throughout the trailer also had posture bars, which indicates that the combat system here will also take some of its cues from titles like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

While the overall structure of A Whisper of Fall: Jinyiwei is unknown, it looks like there will be quite a bit of freedom afforded to players in how they approach situations thanks to the Heavenly Deduction ability. The action RPG is set in the late Ming Dynasty, with the protagonist being forced to infiltrate the eponymous Jinyiwei – the Imperial Guards of the era – as an undercover agent for the black market.

While there will be plenty of combat and sneaking around, A Whisper of Fall: Jinyiwei will also have our hero solving cases under the guise of being an Imperial Guard. This means, interrogating suspects and making a heavy use of the deduction ability to find the true culprit.

A Whisper of Fall: Jinyiwei is coming to PC (via Steam, Epic Games Store and WeGame) and PS5. It doesn’t yet have a confirmed release date.
