Before Xbox snapped up the rights to Hideo Kojima’s upcoming horror game, the video game auteur shook up the world with a playable teaser back in 2014. Aptly named P.T., the experience was a short yet pivotal one that defined Hideo Kojima’s game development career after his rocky departure from Konami. Despite its importance, there’s officially no way to play P.T. anymore. The horror game was pulled from the PlayStation Store in 2015.

Since then, fans have remade the experience entirely, or created new games inspired by P.T. Yet the original game in its full glory isn’t truly accessible unless you’re willing to spend hundreds of dollars on eBay for a system with the game still installed on its hard drive. Thanks to recent advances in the PlayStation homebrew scene, however, the original P.T. is now back and fully playable on PC.

How to play P.T. in 2026

“I made this on my own, in my spare time, because P.T. deserved to keep existing somewhere other than on consoles that still have it installed,” says port creator LoreanXavier on GitHub.

Every texture, model, and sound is the same as the original game, but LoreanXavier warns that fans will need to actually own a copy of the game to get the PC version running. Alternatively, fans can use a jailbroken PlayStation 4 console that can run versions of the game hosted online by preservationists.

While this does present a wrinkle in playing P.T. in 2026, the added features might be worth it. This new version of the game supports higher-resolution, mouse and keyboard controls, AMD upscaling, and can go beyond 30 frames per second. These enhancements are nice, but they may not capture what made P.T. so special back in the day.

Why P.T. is so memorable

For those who weren’t there, the game started out as a mystery. Players had to loop through the P.T.’s realistic walls in specific ways to unlock clues that would eventually reveal that the game was a prelude to a (still unrealized) Silent Hills game. It was a perfect storm of intrigue, timing — Metal Gear Solid 5 was just around the corner — and innovation. Since then, Kojima has continued expanding his approach to walking as a core gameplay mechanic through series like Death Stranding.

Kojima hasn’t divulged many details about OD, which is currently in development in partnership with horror director Jordan Peele. Fans are still readily comparing the hyperrealistic Xbox game to P.T. Since Kojima is hyping OD to be a game unlike anything anyone has seen before, those resemblances will remain strong in viewers’ eyes.
