Red Dead Redemption 2’s Spiderweb Mystery Continues With Discovery of Bird Carvings

Following up on a recent scavenger hunt that was kicked off earlier this month in Red Dead Redemption 2 with players finding clues that seemingly end up leading to Dodd’s Bluff, it looks like the cold trail has gotten warm again. In a new video, YouTuber Strange Man, with help from the game’s community, has noted that the acoustic instruments that the trails led to previously might have something to do with the roof of Fort Wallace. In the video, Strange Man highlights a pair of bird-shaped carvings that were discovered by a member of the community.

The carvings, while initially thought to be little more than visual glitches, were then confirmed as being intentional thanks to data mining. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been much in the way of new discoveries since these carvings were found, with Strange Man even noting that the clues have become less vague as time went on. One possible theory as noted by the YouTuber is the fact that the carvings are pointing towards a large body of water in the northern part of Red Dead Redemption 2‘s map in the Calumet Ravine. This body of water also happens to be in the vague shape of a bird with its wings outstretched. This body of water, interestingly enough, is also close to the Giant’s cave which happens to have a flock of birds living close to it.

While the trail may have gone cold at this point, the majority of the video offers a recap of the scavenger hunt so far. The hunt began when players discovered a spider symbol carved into one of the many telegraph poles in Red Dead Redemption 2. This spider symbol, when overlayed on the game’s map, hinted at a number of different locations throughout Lemoyne and New Hanover that could be hiding more clues. Eventually, players discovered spider webs on various telegraph poles, each of which had bird feathers dangling off them.

The central point of where the carving and the map intersect also has a massive spider web that is cleverly hidden amongst the branches of some trees. The web itself featured shapes in the form of the letter ‘N’, and a symbol that denotes a telegraph pole. This led players to investigate a telegraph pole north of the central spider web, where shooting a certain pole revealed the letter ‘W’ along with glyphs for five poles carved into it.

This new location similarly hid another carving, this time around with the letters ‘NW’ and a glyph in the shape of an acoustic guitar. This would be the clue that led players to travel north west to Fort Wallace, where players found a guitar pointing them to one of the fort’s towers. Another guitar would be found there, pointing to the roof of the tower, which is where the bird carvings were then discovered.

The mystery has been an interesting one to follow, and Rockstar Games for its part has been quiet about it and the community-based investigation about it. If you’re interested in following along with the mystery, keep in mind that there might be spoilers in some of the clues. Red Dead Redemption 2 is available on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. PS5 and Xbox Series X/S owners can experience the masterpiece through backwards compatibility while they wait for the rumoured current-gen remaster.
