Nintendo Switch, Switch 2 Get New System Update Fixing Bluetooth Connectivity Issues

Nintendo has released a new system update for the Switch 2, bringing the console’s firmware up to version 21.0.1. The update was also released on the original Switch, and largely revolves around issues surrounding error codes 2011-0301 and 2168-0002. These codes would pop up on both consoles when trying to use a system transfer through local communication from the Switch to the Switch 2.

With the update, this issue has now been resolved. Aside from this, the update also addressed a bug related to the system waking up from Sleep Mode or coming back online after turning off Airplane Mode which caused wireless controllers and Bluetooth audio devices to not be able to connect. The update also brought in more general system stability improvements. For more details, check out the full patch notes below.

This update follows a larger one that was released earlier this month. That update brought in a host of refinements to both consoles’ UIs, including adding symbols above software icons in the Home menu that better indicate whether the software in question is a physical or digital version. The update also introduced a quality-of-life feature in the form of GameChat getting more options. This includes ensuring that a game doesn’t automatically go into sleep mode while GameChat is being used.

The update did seemingly bring some down sides, however, with plenty of users testing and confirming that, after installing the earlier update, third-party docks for the Switch 2 had stopped working. “A friend bought a cheap dock for his Switch 2 that stopped working after the latest update,” wrote one user. “The new update doesn’t update the official Switch 2 dock, so I don’t think Nintendo intentionally changed the protocol because the official dock would have updated.”

“Can confirm my 2nd (3rd party) dock in our living room just stopped working as well right after today’s update,” posted another user. “A full power cycle did not fix it for me.”

The issue was likely caused by some software conflicts that came with the update, since the Switch 2, much like the original Switch, uses a more restrictive form of the USB-C port than would be standard. The original Switch had faced similar issues with third-party docks. This conflict with the docks had not been listed in any of the patch notes for the Switch 2 update.

Despite this woes, however, the Switch 2 is proving to be an incredibly successful hardware release for Nintendo, with company president Shuntaro Furukawa confirming that more than 84 percent of the users on the latest consoles had transitioned over from the original Switch.

Patch notes for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 update 21.0.1:

  • Fixed an issue where Error Code: 2011-0301 or Error Code: 2168-0002 would repeatedly occur on a Nintendo Switch when attempting a system transfer using local communication from a Nintendo Switch system to a Nintendo Switch 2 system.
  • Fixed an issue where sometimes, after waking up the system from Sleep Mode or turning off Airplane Mode, wireless controllers or Bluetooth audio devices were unable to connect
  • General system stability improvements to enhance the user’s experience.
