Who knew that songs about flushing poop and eating rat legs could be so catchy? If you’re like me, you’ve had the terrific Mewgenics soundtrack stuck in your head constantly since the release of the roguelike cat RPG on Steam earlier this month. It looks like the Mewgenics soundtrack won’t be losing its chokehold on me anytime soon, given that every track in the game just went live on Spotify.
The delightfully crude Mewgenics soundscape is the work of the appropriately named Riduculon, which might ring a bell to anyone who has played The Binding of Isaac. As of this writing, Spotify doesn’t have any of the lyrics for the songs in Mewgenics, but let’s be real. The soundtrack is so memorable, you probably know the words already.
When I first began playing Mewgenics, the silly songs and Newgrounds aesthetic made me cringe. 114 hours later, and my outlook on Mewgenics has totally changed. Somehow, the soundtrack hasn’t grown old yet. If anything, I’m finding new things to appreciate in every song I’ve heard thus far. What’s more, I’m bewildered that, this far in, the game is still revealing more songs that totally rip. To the game’s credit, not all the songs are immature. Without spoiling too much, the music accompanying the space world in Mewgenics is some of the classiest video game music I’ve heard in a while.
I’m calling it now, but the unhinged Mewgenics soundtrack will go down as a gaming classic. I’m crossing my fingers we’ll get to hear an elaborate rendition of at least one of the songs when The Game Awards does its usual musical segment. For now, I recommend that you only listen to the songs you’ve unlocked in the game — that way, you can experience them as intended. Based on Spotify’s play count, most people are just hitting repeat on the Eating Rats song.
I’ll leave you with some choice memes about the Mewgenics soundtrack and how funny it is that songs about decomposing fish could possibly be this damn good.
