Imagine our surprise when we saw word of a new “MMO-like” game hit our news dragnets. We dropped anchor, fired up the fishing net winch, and brought the sorting table starboard to prepare for a fresh new haul. Then imagine our slight disappointment to learn that the game is single-player only. So here we are with the freshly fished-up Afallon.

This upcoming game from the solo development studio Stargazing Interactive bills itself as a “single-player World of Warcraft” with a handcrafted dark fantasy realm that attempts to create “the feeling of a persistent, evolving world, without requiring servers, subscriptions, or other players.” Combat appears to be the more MMO-ish aspect, with a hotbar of abilities and cooldowns, but otherwise it’s just a regular RPG with dungeons, trial challenges, and the promise of quests that change the game’s world.

Afallon is preparing to head into its early access release on Thursday, November 27th, at a price of $12, though it will be on discount during its first two weeks. A timeline for when early access will wrap up isn’t provided, but the solo dev promises to continue to focus on polish, improving zones, and adding more dungeons. So while we can’t really call this a sim of the MMORPG experience in single player, it is at least neat that one person made an open world RPG with vibes MMO fans might enjoy.
