Capcom Has No Plans to Implement Generative AI Assets in RE Engine

Capcom recently caught some criticism regarding its statements about how RE Engine would be improved through the use of AI. In a new statement to IGN, the company has offered some clarification on the matter. A spokesperson for Capcom discussed how, due to the growing scope of games in the modern age, developing them is becoming an “increasingly colossal” process.

To help mitigate this, Capcom decided to integrate AI into its future plans for the RE Engine in order to make the development process more streamlined by bringing in improvements to tools, game testing, and data analysis. The spokesperson made a point of noting that there are no plans to integrate generative AI into the RE Engine for game development. Rather, the company wants to use AI tools to do things like pattern analysis, make predictions, and process data.

“We will not implement assets generated by AI into our games. However, we plan to proactively use it as a contributing technology to improve the efficiency and productivity of the game development process. To this end, we are currently exploring ways to implement it in various areas, including graphics, sound and programming.”

The next generation of the RE Engine is being referred to by Capcom as REX – short-hand for RE Next Engine. The journey to this next-generation engine will be an iterative one with piece-by-piece improvements made over time.

Capcom first debuted the RE Engine with 2017’s Resident Evil 7. Also known as the Reach for the Moon Engine, the RE Engine was developed by the company as a successor to its MT Framework game engine, which powered a variety of games dating back to the Xbox 360 and PS3 era, and was used for titles like the original Dead Rising. Over the course of time, the MT Framework engine would see a number of improvements, and some of the most recent games developed with it included 2018’s Monster Hunter World, 2021’s The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, and 2025’s Capcom Fighting Collection 2.

As for the RE Engine, Capcom has been using it for most of its major projects following its debut. Along with the mainline Resident Evil titles like Village, 2 Remake, and even this year’s Requiem, the engine has also been used for Monster Hunter Rise, Monster Hunter Wilds, and most recently, Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Upcoming titles like Resident Evil Veronica, Mega Man: Dual Override, and the Okami sequel are also being made with RE Engine.

Games made with the RE Engine have been praised for their incredible visual fidelity and smooth gameplay. However, the engine has also caught some criticism with regard to how it handles open-world games. Many players found plenty of performance issues in Monster Hunter Wilds and Dragon’s Dogma 2. Since then, the company has taken steps to alleviate many of these issues, and has even been capable of getting the two titles ready for release on the Nintendo Switch 2.
