CD Projekt RED and Fool’s Theory have been catching quite a bit of criticism for the recent release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered owing to the title’s various performance issues. In a social media post, the studio has confirmed that it has released an update for the PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game to alleviate some of these issues.
The update in question fixes the Xbox Play Anywhere version of the game that previously didn’t let players enable DLSS. Some of the in-game lighting has also been improved, including some interior locations, fixing the problem where places seemed too dark. Similarly, the console versions have been further adjusted to bring them up to par with the PC release.
The developers have said that they are “investigating” issues that players have been reporting through the official Technical Support portal. Thanking the community for doing so, the studio has said that it will continue to release updates bringing more fixes to the game. The next update will be a hotfix for the PC version to address an issue that players have been facing when trying to save the game.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered was released as a free update across PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2 earlier this week. Xbox players have been treated to a major improvement with the free update thanks to the fact that it turns The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt into a Play Anywhere title, giving them a free copy of the PC version in the process. The Nintendo Switch 2 version got a similar bonus, with players who already owned the Switch version of the RPG getting a free digital copy of Remastered.
On the subject of the Remastered update being free, CD Projekt RED’s co-CEO, Michał Nowakowski, had revealed in an interview that the team had never really considered charging for it.
“It was never a question we asked ourselves. We were going deeper into the development of Songs of the Past with [developer] Fool’s Theory, and we started chatting: ‘Why don’t we make the game more modern? Everything felt like it was developed 10 years ago’. Because it was developed more than 10 years ago.
“We started chatting about what we could do to improve it. It started with small things, and then it turned into this larger project, and we suddenly realized we had a remaster on our hands.
“But coming back to your original commercial question, we never thought about it this way. The commercial bit is the expansion, but with the game, we really felt this is the CDPR way to gift it to the players who already own it. It was just never a question we asked ourselves.”
The decision to develop Remastered also came down to the fact that it laid much of the foundation on which the upcoming expansion, Songs of the Past, could be developed. Director Jakub Rokosz even went as far as to say that the expansion outright couldn’t be made without the enhancements from Remastered.
