Due to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s massive scale, director Naoki Hamaguchi seemingly underestimated how many players would go for completionist runs for the platinum trophy. Speaking to AnimeNewsNetwork, he has acknowledged that only 2.6 percent of Rebirth players managed to get the trophy, and wen ton to confirm that it will be much easier to “complete” the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Revelation.
“For Rebirth‘s platinum trophy—well, for Rebirth in general—there’s so much to do. There’s so much content. We wanted to make people go through all this content and perfect it. It’s kind of by design that that would make it difficult.
“So, I don’t want to call it a mistake in judgment or anything, but we also didn’t expect so many people to want the platinum trophy. I think that was what we underestimated here. Battle director Teruki Endo also saw [the fan reaction] and was like, ‘Oh, no! I feel bad—I have regrets.’”
As for how much easier it would be to get the platinum trophy in Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, Hamaguchi said that he expects around 20 percent “or more” of the player base to get it. This was achieved by the development team focusing on making the completionist-oriented side content more engaging rather than simply lowering difficulty. Using VR Combat Simulator battles as an example, Hamaguchi has said that the team learned a lot about encounter design during its time working on Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
“In comparison, for Revelation, the platinum trophy will be easier to get. In terms of how difficult it will be, we’re expecting twenty percent of players or maybe even more than that to be able to obtain it.
“We have a lot of interesting stuff for [the brutal and legendary VR Combat Simulator] battles as well. For example, obviously there are three person battles, but in each set of fights you’ll only be able to use each character once—so it’ll be interesting to see how people go about that. It’s not just about the amount of battles that there are, but the battles themselves that are going to be enjoyable. I think that’s one thing that we’ve learned from Rebirth: to make the battles themselves enjoyable rather than just challenging.”
In another recent interview, Hamaguchi also revealed that multiple playthroughs of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will be required if players want to experience all of the content in the game. Aside from a plethora of side content, the title’s quests will also seemingly feature unique dialogue depending on when you decide to accept it, and which character is involved in the decision. The director said that “we have prepared many cases where it changes not just whose perspective the quest is told from, but the story experience, the gameplay experience, and even the conclusion.”
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is being developed for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2, and is slated for release on April 8th, 2027. For more details, check out what Hamaguchi has said about the risky move to split the remakes of the 1997 RPG into a trilogy.
