Way back in February, we first learned about Guardians of the Wild Sky, a new co-op sandbox from Blue Isle Studios, a company you might remember from its role on the now largely abandoned MMO Citadel Forged With Fire. This week, we’ve gotten some movement on the development of the new game: Paradox Interactive has picked it up to publish it under its banner. Calling it a “survival crafting game,” Paradox and Blue Isle now say GOTWS will launch on Steam early access in 2027.
“Guardians of the Wild Sky challenges players to survive, build, craft, explore and capture creatures in a vast magical world in the skies,” the announcement says. “Playable solo offline or cooperatively with up to four other adventurers, players capture and befriend elemental magical companions known as Guardians. Possessing unique abilities and traits, these extraordinary creatures help players navigate the skies, from supporting their base or airship crew to fighting alongside them in combat.”
“With a deep crafting system and mod support available from day one, players can design and build near-limitless creations, from cozy cottages and flying castles to the mightiest vessels of war. From there, they will set out into a living, breathing world filled with dynamic environments and climates, diverse wildlife, unique landmarks, and treacherous foes, where every adventure brings new discoveries and challenges.”
If you were tempted to write it off as yet another creature collecting sandbox or floating island sandbox – which wouldn’t be entirely unfair, since we’ve had kind of a lot of those over the last few years, most of them doomed – the teams do point out that GOTWS has 450K Steam wishlists and was a top-played title during that demo back in February. Maybe this time will be different?
Back in June, the devs did tell fans that while they will be running more playtests and another demo, they don’t have dates. Players are urged to register on the official site.
