Marvel’s Wolverine Doesn’t Feature the X-Men Because They “Don’t Yet Exist”

Marvel’s Wolverine isn’t an origins story about everyone’s favorite anti-hero – among many things, it appears to be a meditative look at the man himself, with plenty of gore and dismemberment to still go around. It’s also clear that Insomniac is laying the foundation for the X-Men in its take on the universe, especially with the inclusion of Jean Grey, Mystique and many more.

But if it wasn’t obvious enough from the story descriptions and such thus far, the X-Men don’t actually appear in the game. That’s because Marvel’s Wolverine takes place in a world they “don’t yet exist,” per an article by Entertainment Weekly, which includes interviews with the development team and actor Liam McIntyre. “While humanity knows about superheroes like Spider-Man (hence, the events of the previous games), mutants are still largely living in the shadows.

“Those that do know of them, either fear them or see them as subjects for extermination. Wolverine works for Team X, a black-ops group (inspired by the team from the comics) fighting for mutant survival.” So in case there’s any confusion about the group, and whether they were an earlier iteration of the X-Men, that’s not the case.

Marvel’s Wolverine launches on September 15th for PS5. A new story trailer is available, and while highlighting more of the bond between Logan and Jean, it also showcases the former’s stint in Tokyo, which involves battling Lady Deathstrike. We also see more of Sabretooth, Mystique and a mysterious individual who could be Nathaniel Essex (better known as Mister Sinister in the comics).

Aside from Logan traveling worldwide to save mutants, who are being abducted en masse by Bolivar Trask, not much is known about the plot. Nevertheless, you can check out some extensive gameplay of Wolverine’s rage here.
