Control Resonant Director Says “Many” of Its Toughest Bosses Are Optional, Teases Huge Surprise

Despite being a sequel to Remedy’s successful 2019 action-adventure, there’s a reason Control Resonant isn’t simply called “Control 2.” Much of that is to do with a strange resonance preceding the paranatural catastrophe in Manhattan (or so we’d imagine). However, it’s also because of the powerful bosses known as Resonants that Dylan Faden faces on his journey.

Or not, because as director Mikael Kasurinen confirmed to MinMaxx in a rapid-fire interview, they don’t all have to be defeated. In fact, “Many of them are optional,” and you can even fight them out of order, further adding to the Mega Man-style progression of claiming their powers for yourself. And before you ask, some of them have sad backstories to unearth.

Other interesting details revealed by Kasurinen are that, contrary to expectations, the story is about gaining “control over your life” instead of rescuing Jesse or saving Manhattan. He also believes the midpoint will be the game’s “biggest surprise” and promises that the regions are much bigger than expected, though it takes some time for the world to open up. It is easy to get lost, but at least there’s a map which provides a “strategic view” of the city.

With Control Resonant out on September 24th, is Remedy worried about the sheer deluge of games out in the same month? Onimusha: Way of the Sword was cited as a “bit of a concern,” but there are no plans to change the release date.
