Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis End-of-Service Announced for October 6th

Square Enix has announced that it is ending support for Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis on October 6th. Leading up to the game’s servers being taken down, players will no longer be able to purchase any Red Crystals from the in-game store. However, they will be free to spend all the Red Crystals that they might have until the servers are taken down.

In the meantime, planned in-game events will continue until October 6th. Square Enix has also said that it plans to delete all of the personal and account information it has from its players once the end-of-service process has been completed. Players residing in Taiwan will also be eligible for refunds on unused in-game currency. More details about these refunds will be revealed on the game’s official website at a later date.

Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis was originally released on Android and iOS in September 2023 and on PC in December 2023. The title was meant to be a way for players to experience iconic moments from the original release of Final Fantasy 7 and its prequel spin-off, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7, in a new visual style.

“We understand that this news may be disappointing, and we sincerely apologize for the abrupt nature of this announcement,” wrote Square Enix as part of its announcement. “Since the launch of the App Store and Google Play versions on September 7, 2023, and the Steam version on December 6, 2023, we have worked to provide the best possible experience for our players. After careful consideration, however, we have determined that it will be difficult to continue doing so and have made the decision to end service.”

When it first came out, Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis saw quite a bit of success, with Square Enix confirming that the title had been downloaded 7 million times before even coming out on PC. At the time, it decided to reward players for their interest in the game by giving out a thousand Blue Crystals.

In terms of gameplay, Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis featured a fast-paced command-based combat system based on the Active Time Battle system from the original Final Fantasy 7. Players could make use of classic elements, including unique abilities, Materia, summons, and Limit Breaks.

In the meantime, Square Enix is working on wrapping up its Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy with the release of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation in Spring 2027. The title is being developed for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2, and director Naoki Hamaguchi has confirmed that the story will involve characters and events from the original Final Fantasy 7 as well as elements from the title’s various spin-offs.

“Well, at this time it’s best not to say whether Cissnei will appear or not, but there is one thing I can tell you,” explained Hamaguchi in response to a question about whether Cissnei would be showing up again after her last appearance in Rebirth. “This Final Fantasy 7 Remake series is not simply a recreation of the original work, but rather, our goal is to create a single, new Final Fantasy 7 that incorporates the settings and concepts of all the previous spin-off titles, such as Advent Children, Dirge of Cerberus, and Crisis Core. Therefore, the appearance of Cissnei and the inclusion of Dirge of Cerberus Soldiers in the DLC, all have that meaning.”
