To respec in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, you’ll need a special item called a Recoat, which means you can’t respec for free. As it’s hard to create the perfect character build from the get-go, it’s almost a necessity to reset your characters’ stats eventually. If the time has come to maximize Maelle’s damage or enhance Lune’s healing, the respec option is what you need.

Here’s how to respec and obtain more Recoats in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

How to respec in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

As you level your characters in Clair Obscur, you get to assign skill points and attribute points. If you’d like to change the skill point allocation later on, you must respec (reset) those points.

To respec skills, you need a Recoat item. We’ll explain Recoats and how to get them in more detail below, but for now, it’s very important to know the Recoat’s limitations before you spend any. Keep the following rules in mind:

  • A Recoat will only reset a character’s attribute points or skill points, not both! So, if you wish to reallocate all points, you must spend two Recoats.
  • A Recoat only resets points for a single character. If you’d like to reset Maelle’s and Gustav’s skill points, for example, you need two Recoats.

Provided you have a Recoat, here’s how to use it:

  • Find any Expedition Flag on the map. You can recognize them by the golden sparkles. Besides skill point allocation, an Expedition Flag functions as an HP recovery and fast travel spot.
  • Select the character you want to respec.
  • Click either the “upgrade attributes” or “learn skills” button, depending on whether you want to respec their attribute points or respec their skill points.
  • If you want to respec attribute points: Click “reset attributes” at the bottom of the page.
  • If you want to respec skill points: Click “consume to reset tree” at the top of the page.

To unlock respec in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, you just need to find the first Expedition Flag in the game (Meadows Corridor) and allocate some skill or attribute points. Once that’s done, you can use the respec button. It’s highly recommended to save your Recoats for later, though, when you’ve gained more points and more experience.

How to get more Recoats in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

There are various ways to earn Recoats in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. The most straightforward way is to defeat enemies and obtain Recoats as random enemy drops. Although Recoats seem exceedingly scarce in early game, they’ll become much more common after a few hours of playtime. The Ice Golem in Act 3, for example, is known to drop many Recoats. If you find another enemy that drops Recoats, you can farm them by resetting the area at the nearest Expedition Flag and defeating them again.

Other ways to obtain Recoats in Clair Obscur are to buy them from Gestral Merchants or find them as loot. As a new player, you can obtain your first Recoat during the prologue. All you need to do is speak with Nicolas, the painter with the red coat and top hat, and agree to duel him. He’ll reward you with a Recoat regardless of whether you win or lose.

Another relatively easy Recoat location for new players is near Noco’s Hut in Flying Waters. Starting from the teleport waypoint, take the narrow path behind you and walk slightly to the left, past the object that looks like a massive arrow point. From there, turn slightly right and walk toward the large round tunnel. Before the entrance, on a flat stone on the left, there’s a Recoat ready to get picked up.
